- ‘Equal opportunities’ is the vision of the educational system in Lithuania. The Ministry of Education, which is a social institution, ensures equal individual education without any discrimination based of sex, race, language, ethnicity, nationality or social standing.
The structure
- Grade 1 to 4 is qualified as Primary School / Development Education
- Grade 5 to 10 is qualified as Middle School / Senior Primary
- Grade 11 to 12 is qualified as Secondary School / Final Education
Compulsory Education
- Education in Lithuania is compulsory between the age of 7 and 16 for Lithuanian citizens and for children with permanent or temporary residence permits. Therefore, a child has to start attending Primary School the year when turning 7 years old during the same calendar year. If desired, a 6 years old child can start attending school if she/he meets certain requirements.
Marking
- The marking system in Lithuania starts with smiley faces, suns and stars up to grade 4. From grade 5, marking in form of numbers starts to take place. The marks range from 1 to 10 where 10 is the best mark.
