Health Insurance Requirement

What is a health insurance?

The General Description (Resolution no 230) of Health Insurance Procedure regulates the requirement for health insurance for foreign nationals who arrive in the Republic of Lithuania or who seek to receive a temporary residence permit.
 

What are the requirements for a health insurance?

The following shall be indicated in a health insurance policy;

  • Number of health insurance policy;
  • The insurance company: Name, address of the registered office, telephone and fax number;
  • Full name of the insured person;
  • The coverage amount;
  • Duration of the health insurance policy;
  • Territorial coverage of the health insurance policy;
  • Non-insured events;
  • A health insurance may be concluded in any state.
  • The health insurance policy shall guarantee to cover all basic medical assistance cots and travel expenses that may arise in connection with the return to the third-nationals home country duo to heath reasons (including medical transport, escort my medical brigade or a doctor).
  • The health insurance policy shall contain entries in at least one of the following languages: Lithuanian, English, German, French and Russian.
  • A heath insurance policy shall be valid throughout the whole period of a third-country national’s stay [nuoroda I straipsni; #2] in the Republic of Lithuania.
  • The minimum coverage amount in respect of a single third-country national shall be;
 

Do you need a health insurance?

 
The provision does not apply to following foreign nationals who enjoy the privileges and immunities provided for by international agreements and legal acts of the Republic of Lithuania;
  • Members of staff of foreign diplomatic missions, consular posts, missions of international organisation and members of their families who enjoy the privileges and immunities provided for by the rules of international law.
  • Members of official delegations of foreign states.
  • Foreign nationals with diplomatic and service passports.
  • Foreign nationals who work legally in the Republic of Lithuania and pay the prescribed social insurance contributions in the Republic of Lithuania as well as minor members of their families.
  • Citizens of EU Member States of the European Free Trade Association as well as members of their families.
  • Persons who pass in transit through the territory of the Republic of Lithuania and are in possession of facilitated transit documents.
  • Servicemen of foreign states and civil servants assigned to armed forces as well as their dependants.
The requirement to hold a health insurance does not apply to a foreign national;
  • In case of issuing a visa, in the interest of national security, having coordinated with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania;
  • In case of issuing or changing the status of a temporary residence permit in the Republic of Lithuania, where a third-country national has been granted status of a refugee, additional or temporary protection in the Republic of Lithuania or where guardianship has been awarded over a third-country national, or in the interest of state security.
